How to easily navigate Gros Caillou in Les Invalides

Developer Spiders’ action role-playing game Steelrising puts an interesting new spin on the traditional soul-like formula with an exciting setting that combines elements of history, steampunk and sci-fi. Steelrising also offers a versatile combat system that gives players plenty of options to change their playstyle by using a multitude of weapons, armor and modules.

The revolution has waited long enough. It’s time to RISE to save Paris! Steelrising is now available on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. It will be available on Steam, Epic and GoG at 18.00 CEST.

One of the most fascinating aspects of Steelrising is its sprawling levels, which feel like a cross between FromSoftware’s Dark Souls and Team Ninja’s Nioh titles. Both titles have open levels that give players complete freedom to explore and also reward their curiosity.

Each level in Steelrising ends with a boss that must be defeated to progress further into the story.

While most levels are fairly linear, some zones in Steelrising, like Gros Caillou, the first section of Les Invalides, can be a bit tricky to traverse. Here is a comprehensive guide to help players navigate Gros Caillou in Steelrising.

How to navigate the first section of Les Invalides, Gros Caillou in Steelrising

The first section of Les Invalides, Gros Caillou, is easily one of Steelrising’s most confusing levels. The scene is scattered with paths and often wraps around itself. Players familiar with FromSoftware’s Souls games will be right at home in Gros Caillou, but newcomers may feel a little overwhelmed.

The path to Gros Caillou is divided into segments that require players to complete certain tasks to open their paths. The first involves bringing water to a farmer in Gros Caillou.

First section of Gros Caillou – Brings water to the farmer

When you enter the first ward of Les Invalides, go straight ahead and activate Vestal, which are the checkpoints in Steelrising. There are three paths ahead, one to the left, another to the right and another straight ahead. All of these, except the right one, will be unavailable.

Naturally, players should go to the right where they will encounter a Vending Machine and two Panther Vending Machines on the street. While basic automatons have been a regular occurrence so far in Steelrising, this will be the first time players will encounter the Panther-type automaton. Fortunately, the latter aren’t particularly tough as they stagger quite easily and as such can be killed without much difficulty.

Next, players must take the left path where there is a snake-shaped Automaton hiding in the foliage. Players can easily dispatch it with a grenade. Here they also find a water bottle, which will come in handy later.

Further along, players will encounter two more Panther Vending Machines and a Normal Vending Machine, and clearing them out will allow progression to an area with yet another Snake Body Vending Machine.

Walking past the Vending Machine, players will face a Lancer-type vending machine that kills, which allows them to interact with a nearby citizen who will ask for water. Players must then give them the water bottle they found earlier, completing the citizen’s quest. This will allow progression to the main road.

Second section of Gros Caillou – The Church and beyond

Back when exploring the left path, players will come across a graveyard, which should now be fully accessible after completing the first citizen quest. As they head into the graveyard section of the map, they will come face to face with the first ball and chain automaton, which are pretty tough enemies.

Aegis’ weapon is an extension of herself in Steelrising ⚔️ Aggressive combat leads to overheating, which players must control via a cooling system. More match details on the September 8th release:

It’s a good idea to stock up on Explosive Grenades to deal with these enemies as they are quite susceptible to stagger. These machines can hit quite hard and require precise dodging skills to avoid being hit by their spinning chain attacks.

Defeating these enemies is all about timing attacks and not getting greedy with multiple hits. The rogue machines are also quite vulnerable to frost, which players can use to their advantage.

Upon exiting the graveyard, they will encounter another one of these enemies who will reward them with a treasure chest containing the Grade 1 Critical Health Module.

To the left will be more Ball and Chain enemies along with a Panther Automaton which dispatches both of them will reward players with the Fire Chain weapon.

Further on, they will come across a huge fire with a bunch of automatons guarding it. Before engaging the machines, players should sneak around the perimeter and open the gate that leads back to the Vestal. This will allow them to level up and make the necessary changes to their build.

Final Area of Gros Caillou – The Giant Fire

When players enter the area of heavy fire, they will encounter a bunch of enemies, including a Lancer-type Automaton, a Ball-and-Chain Automaton, and a few regular ones.

Dispatching them will allow progression to the house on the left where you will find a treasure chest containing the Muskan Kit.

The next area will have players facing a pair of Panther Automats and a hidden Lancer Automat. After killing the machines in the area, they’ll need to take the left-most path, which houses a few more Panther Automats, a snake-bodied Automat, and a gate leading back to Vestal.

After unlocking the gate, players should go straight and then take a right. Here, they will be faced with two ball-and-chain machines, which will allow them to retrieve a module key near a downed machine in the area. Further along, players will come across the workshop door, which is the natural progression path. It can be accessed via a makeshift bridge across the workshop.

But before entering the workshop, players must turn around and head towards the path opposite the gate, which leads to two snake-covered automatons. Disposing of them will yield a treasure chest containing the Grade 2 Efficient Charging Module.

After looting the treasure, players must go back and jump over the gate to enter the Esplanade des Invalides. Here they will have to tackle four ball-and-chain machines. Fortunately, the enemies are fairly far apart, allowing players to pick them off one by one.
