Ubisoft admits Assassin’s Creed’s modern story stinks

Assassin’s Creed will make some changes: Say goodbye to the modern story.

I love this. Ubisoft just found the perfect way to politely admit – and not admit – that the Assassin’s Creed story is a waste of time. You know, during the first AC the whole ‘hopping back and forth between the present and the past’ was kind of cute, but after that…it became a pain. We wanted to jump off tall buildings and murder people, not play a barebones science/walking simulator. Ever since then, fans have been voicing their opinion, but Ubisoft wouldn’t listen… until now.

Assassin’s Creed will no longer have a modern story

Well, to be precise, the modern story will not completely cease to exist – it will just no longer be told in Assassin’s Creed games. Instead, Ubisoft’s new cornerstone will now hold the light of disappointment: Assassin’s Creed Infinity now takes over the modern storytelling dutiesbut it’s not as straightforward as it seems because… AC Infinity isn’t really a game…

Ubisoft revealed that Assassin’s Creed Infinity will serve as the hub platform for the series, and that’s about all we know about it. Ubisoft is deliberately vague when describing the upcoming service, but from the sounds of it, AC Infinity is an interactive, glorified game store from which you can enter/purchase all future AC releases. Meanwhile, the modern story will be told exclusively within said hub. In other words: you stick around the hub to get your modern kicks, then jump into any Assassin’s Creed game for an exclusive assassin experience.

From the sounds of it, AC Infinity will be the modern world we all know and disgust, and you can simply roam around and choose to jump into any portal you choose to enter the assassin experience of your choice.

People who love to just delve into the past will be able to jump right in there and never be interrupted or need to know who Desmond and Layla are. The way we tell the story will evolve over time. But the abstraction that we want people to have is [Infinity] is your Animus. It’s your DNA Explorer on your desktop. You are the main character of the story.

In details, Ubisoft calls this period 3 of the AC experienceafter Valhalla was the end of Period 2. Sounds exciting and with Assassin’s Creed Codename Red, Hexe, Mirage and Jade all together… Period 3 is almost ready to go.
